Sat March 14:Lagos Writers hosts Segun Olusola on the Power of the Word

Dear Writer,

As Ambassador Segun Olusola marks his 74th birthday on March 18, the Association of Nigerian Authors, Lagos celebrates with this Nigeria's great user of the spoken and the written words. Olusola, a theatre and television man, the fist ANA Vice president to former President Chinua Achebe, author of Village Headmaster and Twenty Five years of Nigerian Broadcasting and other books on social and refugee matters, frontline broadcaster and a pioneer refugee carer and champion will be the guest of the house.

Very few Nigerians practice the capacity to lend a generously listening ear the way Chief Olusola does at any time.

In his many years in broadcasting, Olusola who has prepared Nigerian heads of State for the camera, will be speaking on The Place and Power of the Spoken and Written Word. He would also be sharing with writters on how to present themselves before television cameras, and at public interviews.

Dear writer,

As a result of this year's Valentine's day coinciding with our regular second Saturday of every month meetings, the house took a decision to allow members have some time with their spouses and lovers. We however moved the meet to the last Saturday of the same February.

We intend to have readings of poems and prose passages on love, share personal experiences on the issue and go ahead to intellectually discuss its very nature and how our associatio, ANA can be loved beyond a personal interest.

You are expected to come with your writings on love and love letters and correspondences that can help the experiential understanding of the subject.

Nigerian writers, at home and abroad, willing to enter their new works for the Annual Literary Prizes of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) may do so now.

Interested creative writers should send six copies (6) of their entries (specifying the category being entered for) alongside a covering letter to the General Secretary, Association of Nigerian Authors, Suite 67, National Theater Complex, Iganmu Lagos. The entries which can be for any of the following categories must not have been entered before and must have been published between 2008 and 2009:

GUIDELINES FOR TEEN AUTHOR PRIZES

1.             Entrants must be students in any secondary school in Nigeria
2.     Entries must be a collection or a single story of between 25 – 40 pages for prose, or between 25 – 40 poems for poetry.
3.                Illustration (optional).
4.                Accompanying documents are:
(i)Letter of identification from school principals on letter headed papers bearing name, signature and stamp with the entrants' two passport photographs, name, school, age (attach birth certificate) (II)entrants admission letters; (III)current cumulative record of entrants' academic performance (Junior or Secondary School); (IV)letter of consent from parents; (V)entrants' email addresses and phone contacts.
5.                Unpublished entries (in six copies) should be properly bound.

Deadline for the receipt of all entries for the 2009 ANA Literary Prizes is Teusday 31st March 2009. A shortlist will be announced in the first week of October, 2009. Winners of the prizes will be announced at the Awards Dinner in Minna, Niger State during the 28th International Annual Convention   of ANA in October ,2009.

The Poet Voice:
there are laws
and there are no laws
and in Nigeria we have our laws
Nigerian Law does not criminalise witchcraft
Why? Do not ask me because I don't know

I am called by my surname OMOSUN
If I tell you the meaning I think
They will crucify me and call me WITCH

The Nigeria criminal law know not what witch means
Mainly because you cannot prove witchcraft
or the abracadabra that its associates

so where there is no law

We can not try them for murder

Sequel to our most inspiring meeting on the last second Saturday of this month where we heartily discussed What ANA Should Be Seen Doing For Writers, is this follow-up issue on the need for writers to take the bull by the horns in taking their craft and economic worries beyond the typical application of the strategy of do nothing; of practiced helplessness.

We want you to come and be part of this open house discussion on taking our craft of writing beyond the partial fulfillment of the mere psychological satisfaction of being published, or of being a prize winner that does not transform our lives from what it used to be. We'd like to know your views on this, and what you propose should be the strategic new direction that will afford writers a better deal in this era when other members of the art family are profiting from their art including the late starters, Stand-Up -Comedians. I am very delighted to let you into a well-kept secret that has taken all manner of speculations , exagerations and reductions.I am glad to let you know that i will be 40 years old om Mon. November 10 without a wife and wealth enough to attract the type that deserves me.

My restless life as some friends have always harped upon, has snatched some meaning through the pen.I will on November 10 as i re-mourn the death of Ken Saro- Wiwa, will try to hoist three books on a new website created in part for that purpose since i coudn't be satisfied with the cover designs that would have made me come out with two of the more recent of the books.So i decided to hoist my thoughts on the world wide web.So you should be reading in part:

Fela's Re-arrangement: A Collage of the Poetic Biography of Nigeria's Folkhero of Afrobeat Music,

It is heartwarming to let you know that the just concluded ANA Zamfara 2008 is one that has most treated writers with a lot of star-studded respect. The new baby Chapter of the ANA Zamfara simply began life by skipping crawling into running well ahead of other chapters with its command of state assistance emboldened by its education driven state governor.

Nigerian's veteran and iconic copywriter and advertising man, Uncle Ted Mukoro who just turned 80 in October will be hosted by Lagos writers.The famous copywriter of star beer's "shine shine bobo" advertisement and a major hand that built Star beer into market success will be on hand to solve two major problems for writers. Greetings! You are encouraged to be at the coming national convention in Zamfara fro Thurs 30 October to Sat November 1 at Gusau Hotel. Gusau is the state capital and the state is agog with billboards announcing our expected arrivals.

Clear your doubts and biases about Sharia. We need to get over the media conditionings on this. Your best report on Zamfara is best got from the Youth Corpers who served there.

Kano 2001 remains one of the best ANA conventions in recent memory. We enjoyed ourselves.

Another attraction is the opportunity of seeing the caliphate and its environs. A golden opportunity to see the north North that influenced the other parts.

Lets be there for our committed ANA Zamfara chapter who always come all the way to the different part of the country wherever the Convention held.

Dear writer and journalist,

The Centre of Excellence chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors(ANA) Lagos will be holding it Saturday September 13 reading as uaual.

First Segment: 2pm . 3pm

- Works in progress

- Public presentation and celebration of new books

Second Segment: 3pm - 4.30pm

GUEST WRITER: Dr. Femi Olugbile

Author of five books among which are three novels: Lonely Men, shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize, Leader and Batolica. His other books are in his medical area as a trained pyschiatrist a profession he has put to great use in his exploration of his fictional characters. These books are: Nigeria at Work (Social psychology/psychiatry) and his off the field field book , Ten Ahead! A History of Table Tennis in Nigeria.

Olugbile who is the Chief Medical Director at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital will be reading from his past and present works. We have had to drag him out of the hospital so that he can also attend to his God-given talent which carries more judgement after all else is done professionally and vocationally.

He is excited and he has given his word.He has also promised to help arrange the possibility of using his medical links to provide committed ANA Lagos members with a free collective medical check up.

Third Segment: 4.30pm - 6pm

DISCUSION : Obama: Oratory, Orature, Literature and Black Hope in America

SPEAKER: Chinweizu, World class thinker, writer, Africanist and  Black Redemptionist

Writers Mourn lettered men, Solzhenitsyn, Jose and Artists

Just as the Centre of Excellence chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Lagos was just marking the longevity associated with writers and fighters in the persons of Dr. T.M Aluko and Dr. Nelson Mandela's 90th birthdays,and preparing to jointly examine Lessons From Mandela and Fela, Two System Fighters on Saturday August 9, 2008, a major writer and fighter, Mr. Alexander Solzhenitsyn of the dreaded system of Josef Stalin's Soviet Union, passed away at 90 too. So did the quintessential Nigerian journalist, Mr. Babatunde Jose at 82.

ANA Lagos mourns the great Russian novelist, Alexander Solzhenitsyn,the writer who fought Josef Stalin's repressive Russia to a standstill with his courage, his pen and his voice. He also did so much to the general understanding of repressive systems and the appreciation of prison literature with works like The Gulag Archipelago, One day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich among his many books with which he exposed Stalin's Russia.For the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA Lagos, it is both prophetic of their celebration of the longevity associated with writers and fighters as evidenced and celebrated in Dr.T. M Aluko and Dr.Nelson Mandela, as it is of their topic of discussion for Saturday 9 August in their every second Saturday of the month reading on: Lessons From Mandela and Fela, Two System Fighters.

In the words of Mr. Chike Ofili, the chapter Chairman, "To help bring the distant death of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the great and unbowed Russian writer that resisted the tyranny of Josef Stalin's misrule with his courage, pen and voice home to our Nigerian environment, is to try to apprehend the repressive psychological weather of fear that journalist-fighter Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe worked under colonial Nigeria, that the afrobeat musical maestro, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and the fire brand legal luminary, Gani Fawehinmi who were constantly gallowed by repressive military regimes in Nigeria, operated in; whilst not forgeting Prof. Chike Obi, Prof Wole Soyinka and Dr. Bala Usman. So was A.S of Russia in Stalin's gulag" .

We also mourn Alhaji Babatunde Jose a lettered and committed man of the pen who was much sold out to journalistic excellence at a time when news gathering was much more challenging.We celebrate rather than mourn the autobiographical author of Walking a Tight Rope and greatly hope that today's journalism in Nigeria that is increasingly getting compromised in standards and ethics, and ever waiting for the news to walk its way into the newsroom in a wait-and-get manner, will find rejuvenation from his death says Chike Ofili.

In similar manner, the body of writers commiserate with the Performing Musician Association of Nigeria,PMAN and broadcasters for their losses too many."We are bowed by the death of the revolutionary fighter singer, Sunny Okosun, the technical depth of the musicianship and musicology of Steve Rhodes, the pleasure giving music of Oliver de Coque, the budding music of Sammy Needle. So do we fondly miss the fast fading research enabling broadcast presentation style and politeness of the late NTA man, Mr.Segun Apata, and Mr. Alade Aromire the resorceful movie maker in the yoruba tradition who brought entrepreneurship and the will to solve a threatening challenge to the movie making business hobby, and for his business acumen even in the Estate business.

The Centre of Excellence chapter of the ANA, Lagos invites writers and the general public to its 2pm meeting on Saturday 9 August at the Aina Onabolu , National Arts gallery Wing of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.

Profile of our Speakers:

Mr. Segun Sofowote: broadcaster, musician, author, publisher is a unique system fighter who has almost successfully turned his back on society and institutions to survive in spite of it.He is a Fela contemporary and a most popular music presenter in the 1970s.

He would be a new addition to our rich team of discussants.

Odia Ofeimun:is a chronic optimist in the possibility of a new Nigeria, a Fela man who has poems for Fela in most of his collections. He is also very well acquinted with the South African situation and his collection of poems: Under the African Sky is a poetic exploration of the South African challenge and the black response to it. A tapestry of history, culture and politics that seeks solution to apartheid under one African sky.

Sola Olorunyomi: is a lost in Fela 's lore and labyrith. A poetic and Fela scolar from the University of Ibadan, a former journalist and a nomad acoss Africa and the world stopped by marriage.

Guest Writer: Adewalw Maja Pearse is a well known editor who like Chinua Achebe,worked with Heinemann.He will bring so much into his session.

         Writers Examine MANDELA AND FELA TWO SYSTEM FIGHTERS

The Centre of Excellence Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Lagos will be doing a public celebration of Africa's symbol of our globally desired humanity, Madiba, Nelson Mandela who turned 90 on July 18; and one of Africa's finest music maestro with a musical mission and direction, Fela Anikulapo Kuti on Saturday 9 August, 2008.The chapter intends to take a look at the similarities and differences in the ways these two accomplished change agents took on the different systems within ttheir countries.Whereas Mandela took on apartheid as represented in their foreign overlords headlong in South Africa through political activism, even against 27 years of incaceration,Fela confronted internal oppression, corruption and retrogression with his musical weapon and verbal activism.

At the ANA Lagos' monthly reading, Mr. Chike Ofili the Chairman of the Chapter would be making a pre-presentation of the ready poetic biography of Fela to the public, under the programmes's segment:Work in Progress.It is an anthology, the publics' poetic interpretation of Fela sent in to chikeofili@yahoo.com over two years. Contributors to the coming collection of poems are required to be around, and new contributors, particularly women will be given till the end of August for the final submission for the book that will be coming out on the month of Fela's birthday in October.

Writers Celebrate Mandela and Aluko at 90

The Centre of Excellence Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors Lagos holds a twin celebration for Africa's living human brand of brands, the former president of South Africa, the author of Long Walk to Freedom and the most revered world statesman, and a for Nigeria's oldest living writer ever, the author of One Man One Matchet, One Man One Wife, Wrong Ones in the Dock … an engineer, scholar and trustee of the national body of the association, Dr. T. M. Aluko who both recently turned the rare age of 90.

While Dr. Nelson Mandela's autobiography, Long Road to Freedom (1994) chronicles blacks and his engagement with colonial overlords in South Africa as seen through his experiences and eyes, Dr. T.M Aluko's fictions imaginatively and satirically situate his lived experiences with colonial and post-colonial Nigeria .

It is a special home delivery reading of writers on Saturday 26 July 2008 at Dr. Aluko's Apapa Lagos home, at 2pm . The event will also be hosting the ace comedian, Mr. Julius Agwu, who in the spirit of the satire and sarcasm that define the works of Pa Aluko, will be talking about "The Potency of Laughter and Satire", while Mr. Toyin Akinosho a widely traveled arts man and to all the nooks and crannies of South Africa and Africa will be taking a close look at "The Man Mandela: His Book, and Creativity in SA". Cornerstone will also be on hand to give us his meaningful music with melodies aplenty as we get our "beerings" right in-between poems; stories and jokes for the two "Ninetyees".

This will be a private celebration of the Madiba, the biggest human pride of Africa and the world. The man who taught us to fight, forgive and reconcile with our opponents and enemies. The public one comes up on second Saturday of August at the National Arts Gallery, Aina Onabolu Complex, National Theatre, Lagos .

50 year old ANA members and above are especially expected. They and those below fifty should come clutching wine with canned drinks and small chops.
